Doors were opening for several budding young hockey stars at the recent NHL entry draft in Los Angeles. However, in the case of Mason West, it might be the first of multiple doors opening for his sporting future.
West is a young man with opportunity knocking at his doorstep. Selected 29th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks out of Edina High School late in the first round of the draft, West is a two-sport star at the Minnesota school.
He’s a high-scoring forward for the hockey team. West accumulated 114 points (51 goals and 62 assists) in 91 games. During the 2023-24 season, West accounted for 15 goals and 38 points in 30 games as Edina won the state championship.
At the same time, the 6-foot-6, 218-pound athletic specimen is the starting quarterback for the Edina football team. During the 2025 season, West threw for 2,592 yards and 37 touchdowns against only four interceptions. He completed 178 of 244 passes. West’s passer rating was 139.9.
He is being pursued with scholarship offers by many NCAA Division I schools. The list includes Kent State, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), and South Dakota. He plans to play hish final season of high-school football in the fall.
West, though, believes hockey is his best game, and the one he intends to pursue professionally. His plan in the fall isn’t to hit the gridiron. He’ll be heading to the rink to play junior hockey for the Fargo Force of the USHL. After that, West is committed to playing college hockey at Michigan State in 2026-27.
